Purchasing/Stores Manager – Jefferson, TX

Job purpose

In general, plan, direct, and coordinate the purchasing of supplies, equipment and contracts to maintain efficient operation of an Oriented Strand Board Mill.  Duties and responsibilities include represent company in negotiating contracts and formulating policies with suppliers.

Duties and Responsibilities

Purchasing Manager is responsible for ensuring the plant has all necessary parts, material, and contractor support to accomplish our goals.   To that end, these responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for directing and coordinating activities of personnel engaged in buying, selling, and distributing materials, equipment, machinery, and supplies.
  • Interact with contractors to get best price for services and materials.
  • Review and approve contracts for materials and services within scope of authority.
  • Increase and sustain company profitability by maintaining accurate inventory levels. Ensure that optimal inventory is present and ready for use
    • Takes the lead role in the implementation of the cycle counting program and inventory accuracy.
    • Direct and coordinate activities for storeroom personnel who ensure materials are properly labeled, including correct units of measure, and stored in the correct locations. Troubleshoot issues and help provide solutions.
    • Develop and implement procedures for ensuring that adequate inventory levels are present.
    • Come up with ways to dispose of or sell obsolete items in the inventory.
    • Audit the facility’s entire inventory on a regular basis and provides reports to management.
    • Keep a particular area for returned goods tidy and clean.
  • Keep up with changing technologies such as computer software.
  • Generate reports, spreadsheets and other information as needed to accomplish tasks.
  • Monitor spending and contract compliance.
  • Establish or implement best practices for purchasing and contracting.
  • Communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, and other external sources. This information may be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.
  • Position requires being honest and ethical in business dealings.
  • Communicate effectively with all team members and ensure miscommunications are minimized.
  • Coordinate with other senior staff members on personnel, safety, finance, and purchasing issues, looking for ways to increase and enhance all functional areas.
  • Lead by example.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications required to successfully perform this role.  These are the qualifications that are necessary for someone to be considered for the position.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Leading and setting the example with safety.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years manufacturing experience OR 10 years of manufacturing management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Managerial/Supervisory experience (Preferably in purchasing and/or inventory management).
  • Thorough knowledge of purchasing and inventory management concepts and application.
  • Leadership — ability to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction.
  • Engaging others — ability to set and achieve goals through others.
  • Innovation — demonstrates creativity and alternative thinking to develop new ideas for and answers to work-related problems.

Specialized knowledge or skills needed:

  • Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships between cross related departments and maintain them over time.
  • Demonstrates the ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions and solve problems immediately.
  • Shows the ability to work well under pressure, such as when inventory deliveries or shipments become late or forgotten.
  • Possesses effective written and verbal communication skills; displays reading comprehension skills.
  • Displays the ability to multitask and handle multiple issues at the same time without stress.
  • Analyze data to make informed decisions.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic maintenance planning, contract and purchasing methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of best practices, principles and practices, and efforts for acquiring best possible pricing for contract goods and services.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of OSB.

 Working conditions

Role requires a person to work in working conditions such as heat, cold, snow, rain, ice, frost, humidity, severe storms and so forth.  Special working conditions may include regular evening and weekend work, shift work, working outdoors, working as a team regardless of challenge, and so forth.  Exposure to noise, dirt, grease, water and sawdust is common.

Physical requirements

Physical ability to perform the essential job functions of the position, which includes climbing stairs, navigating catwalks, working at heights up to 30 feet above the ground, lifting up to 50 pounds (from floor to shoulder height), stooping, and bending, carrying up to 30 pounds at least 40 feet.
