ELECTRONIC CONTROLS ENGINEER – BEMIDJI MINNESOTA

RESPONSIBILITIES

In conjunction with the GM and maintenance manager, provide automation solutions to increase efficiency and reliability in the manufacturing process.  Develop strategies and programs to maintain compliance with applicable Norbord and regulatory electrical requirements and achieve World Class safety.

Safety

  • Ensure Zero Lost Time/Zero Recordable Incidents in Area
  • Coordinate the collection of SSOP, LO/TO procedures and safe work practices associate with projects
  • Develop and implement plans to reduce exposure to area and electrical hazards
  • Support Management of Change throughout the mill.  Collaborate with peers to develop KPIs around MOC implementation and effectiveness.

Role

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, industry, and various internal programs.
  • Design, develop, and program software for real time PLC control improvements.
  • Design and develop graphical user screens utilizing various HMI protocols.
  • Configure and troubleshoot controls communication networks.
  • Perform oversight of OEM control and electrical modifications.
  • Provide Technical support in the development and review of work scopes, test procedures, alarm response procedures, commissioning plans and vendor reports.
  • Prioritize, plan, and execute controls upgrades.
  • Modify control system logic to optimize equipment performance and control.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair instrument, electronic, and electrical equipment on the site to manufacturers specifications;
  • Provide technical expertise in troubleshooting operating systems.
  • Provide technical expertise in troubleshooting PLC’s during start-up and day-to-day operations.
  • Provide technical expertise in troubleshooting electrical equipment such as motors, switchgear, and motor control centers during start-up and day-to-day operations.
  • Read and understand pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, and electronic documentation and drawings, and interpret equipment data.
  • Test, inspect, and adjust control instrumentation and determine causes of instrument malfunction.
  • Develop and maintain control logic modification process.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications required to successfully perform this role.  These qualifications are necessary for someone to be considered for the position.   A reasonable accommodation may be allowed for some aspects of the role as determined by Human Resources.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • 4-year engineering degree in Electrical, Control Systems, or similar field preferred. 2-year E&I associates or other qualified training acceptable.  5-7 years of professional electronic/controls engineering experience.
  • Alternatively, possess and demonstrate 5-10 years of experience in the use of advanced controls techniques through a combination of hands-on experience and specialized training.

Specialized knowledge or skills needed:

  • In-depth knowledge of multiple versions of RSLogix software.
  • Experience developing HMI’s using FactoryTalk.
  • Knowledge of the design and configuration of control system networks using ControlNet, Device Net, and Ethernet I/P.
  • Control system upgrade experience.
  • Ability to convert PLC5 hardware and software to Control Logix.
  • Ability to network from Cisco or Rockwell software and hardware components such as Stratix 8000, 5200, or 6000 switches.
  • Specify, program, and integrate Powerflex 755, 753, 525, and 523 drives.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and documentation.
  • Startup/operational support experience for high volume industrial manufacturing operations
  • In-depth knowledge of the electrical and/or instrument/control craft typically gained through considerable hands-on work experience
  • Ability to define and configure devices on a network through a software interface.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The job is within a heavy industrial environment and you may be required to work within various areas of the factory. Dependent upon the area you will work in, the environmental conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, wet, and noisy. The position requires occasional off-shift or weekend support of a continuous operation.  Safety is our highest priority and safety procedures/guidelines must always be adhered to. This includes safety wear such as hearing protection, protective clothing and steel-toed shoes.  Exposure to noise, dirt, grease, water, and sawdust is common.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical ability to perform the essential job functions of the position, which includes climbing stairs, navigating catwalks, working at heights up to 30 feet above the ground, lifting up to 50 pounds (from floor to shoulder height), stooping, and bending, carrying up to 30 pounds at least 40 feet.

DIRECT REPORTS

This position has no direct reports.  Leadership is a key requirement for success in this role.

Position is exempt.   Rate of pay is DOE.
