Environmental Certification on Our Fiber Supply

Norbord MDF has been certified by SCS that at least 80% of the raw material used in the Deposit mill has been designated as pre-consumer recycled content.

The Green Cross logo awarded by SCS is incorporated into the packaging to let customers know that they are buying an environmentally friendly product.

The certification does not represent a change in Norbord's policy on using recycled fiber, but a confirmation of ongoing responsible environmental wood procurement practices. These practices support sustainable forestry and complete utilization of a renewable resource.

A Word on Our Resin

Norbord MDF uses a resin that contains formaldehyde (CH20), a chemical compound found in paints and cosmetics, paper products finishes, insulation materials, "permanent press" fabric coatings, and other household and consumer products. Formaldehyde also occurs naturally in the environment, is produced in small quantities by the human body, and can be released through combustion - such as by automobiles or cigarettes, or burning wood, kerosene or natural gas.
In the last 15 years, formaldehyde emissions from composite panels have been reduced dramatically. Panels produced today, on average, emit only about one-sixth as much formaldehyde as those produced in the early 1980s.

Voluntary formaldehyde emission limits established by industry have played a major role in bringing formaldehyde emission levels down. Norbord meets or is better than the voluntary formaldehyde limits. Testing is in accordance with ANSI A208.2-2002 MDF using ASTM E-1333 large chamber testing protocol.

This means emissions will be at 0.3 (ppm) or less.
