Today’s engineered wood products combine the traditional benefits of natural timber with the advantages of modern design and construction methods.
Norbord’s Sterling Roofdek is a prime example of this quality combination. Made from softwood logs grown in sustainably managed forests, it has impeccable environmental credentials and has all the desirable qualities of natural wood. It can be sawn, drilled, planed, sanded and glued.
However, as an engineered product, Sterling Roofdek has none of the natural flaws and defects of sawn timber – no splits, shakes or knotholes. Made from Norbord’s Sterling OSB (Oriented Strand Board), Sterling Roofdek has a homogenous and consistent structure built up from layers of softwood veneer strands oriented in cross-directional layers to give optimum strength in all directions.
Sterling Roofdek is made from 18mm thick Sterling OSB 3 boards sanded with the two long edges tongued and grooved for use as decking on flat and pitched roofs.
Standard Sterling Roofdek boards measure 2440mm x 1220mm and are laid with their long edges at right angles to the supporting joists. The short edges are staggered to ensure strength and rigidity in the final roof structure. Unlike square edged panels, Sterling Roofdek requires no continuous support along the tongue-and-groove edge joints, although the square short edges must be supported.
Sterling Roofdek boards are sanded to a smooth finish to give superior adhesion qualities for all flat roofing applications. They are easily fixed using 3mm diameter, 50mm long ring shank nails or screws at 100 mm centres across the supporting joists.
Like any wood or wood-based product, Sterling Roofdek boards respond to changes in atmospheric moisture by expanding or contracting slightly. Therefore, boards must be carefully stored in dry conditions prior to fixing and 3mm expansion gaps allowed between boards when fitted.
The orientation of the wood strands distributes forces evenly through the boards, giving Sterling Roofdek excellent structural properties. It is certified under BS 5268: Part 2 for structural applications and is capable of spanning up to 610mm between supports. The boards are made under a quality assurance system registered to BS EN ISO 9001 and the product is approved by the British Board of Agreement.
Sterling Roofdek’s consistent structural properties make it a reliable, predictable product that can be used in any roofing application with complete confidence.
