A large percentage of the MDF bought by British DIY enthusiasts is Norbord’s Caberwood, thanks to a distribution agreement between Norbord and Finnish timber importer and manufacturer, Finnforest.

Caberwood MDF is the original product; the first manufactured in Norbord’s factory in New York State in 1966. In 1979, Norbord’s Cowie plant, in Stirlingshire, became the first UK producer of MDF and Caberwood has dominated the UK MDF market ever since.

One of the most popular sheet materials used in construction and furniture manufacturing, MDF is currently enjoying a huge increase in demand from the DIY sector where its versatility and excellent finishing qualities are much appreciated.

Finnforest supplies Caberwood MDF in standard sheet sizes, but also manufactures and distributes value-added MDF products such as skirting boards, dado rails, architraves and other mouldings.

Norbord’s distribution agreement with Finnforest ensures that the full range of Caberwood products is available via the major retail outlets, thereby ensuring comprehensive coverage of the UK market.

A nationwide delivery operation from Cowie ensures a continuous flow of product into the Finnforest supply network, delivering to Finnforest depots five days a week.

According to Finnforest Purchasing Manager - Panel Products, Bernie Ryan, the relationship has important strategic advantages for both parties: “The partnership gives us a reliable supply of high quality MDF and, in return, we provide Norbord with access to a large share of the DIY market through our own distribution”, he says.

Reliability of supply was a key factor influencing Finnforest’s choice of supplier. “We deliver to more than 600 DIY stores across the UK every week,” says Mr Ryan. “So to keep that up, we rely on suppliers who deliver a quality product and service when they say they will.”

Caberwood is available in four grades to suit different applications. As well as the original Standard board, consumers can choose from Caberwood Light, Caberwood Moisture Resistant and Caberwood Deep Rout. The Light grade is 20% lighter than Standard MDF, making it ideal for applications where weight is critical.

Moisture Resistant Caberwood is made using melamine modified MR resins and is ideal for use in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas where high humidity can occur. Caberwood Deep Rout has a relatively high density throughout the board and gives an excellent finish on machined and moulded edges.
