Engineered wood-based panel manufacturer Norbord has marked 21 years of business at its Inverness OSB plant. The plant, which produces Sterling OSB (oriented strand board), opened in 1985 and, during that time, it has grown into the largest single employer in the area. In addition, Norbord has become a hugely valuable contributor to the regional economy and associated businesses across the north of Scotland, with more than 1,000 people in related industries having close business links with the company.

A recent celebratory event, attended by a number of customers from the UK and abroad, as well as representatives of the industry’s associations, looked back on the success of the plant over the years and on the strength of the company today. Norbord’s Sterling OSB now enjoys 35% of the UK market with over 300,000m³ being produced each year.

Dave McElroy, Deputy Managing Director of Norbord Europe, reflected on the company’s ongoing success and its relationship with its employees: “Over the past 21 years, the name on the gates may have changed a number of times, but what has remained constant at Norbord’s Inverness plant is the quality of the Sterling OSB it has produced and the positive impact it has made on the economy in the Inverness area. Many of our employees have been with us for all of the 21 years!”

As well as presentations from senior management, guests heard from Bryan Woodley, Chief Executive of the UKTFA, who detailed the growth of the UK timber frame market over the past decade, as well as looking ahead at key drivers for the future: including increased health and safety, training and sustainable construction.
